Description

Empire at War is a Star Wars real-time strategy game featuring galactic, space, and land game modes across its campaign and skirmish battles. As the last true Star Wars game of the genre, it remains very popular and an expansive modding community has existed since its launch in 2006.

Skirmish Ground Combat Overhaul is my own mod designed to showcase entirely new ways to play Empire at War. The campaign and space modes had already been well-covered by other mods, however land has generally been disregarded and considered the least fun. I overhauled how land battles are fought by redesigning units, abilities, mechanics and balancing. Before I released, some other mods began to implement similar features, so I focused in on the skirmish side, designing a framework to allow unique modes with different gameplay and objectives, such as accumulating victory points. By creatively reapplying existing systems, I was able to implement a base-building feature, inspired by other RTS games like Age of Empires.

While on a much smaller scale than other mods made by full teams, it has over 2500 current subscribers and garnered me an invitation to Empire at War: Remake, one of the larger teams, to integrate my ideas there.

My Role

While a personal project, all visual assets are by other modders or from the base game, and the base game provides the game engine (Alamo) and framework. However, the mod itself - with all the gameplay mechanics, design ideas, maps and programming - are fully my own.

For this, I needed to work with many Alamo-specific tools, program in XML and script in Lua, alongside extensive design work and balancing.
