Description

Description

TinyPolitik is multiplayer 4X grand strategy distilled into a social and casual experience, where diplomacy is discussed between friends in the tearoom as their empires rise and fall.

The game was produced over a period of twelve weeks as part of a university course, by a team of five - two artists and three programmers.

The game has full online multiplayer using a server with Photon Unity Networking, with asynchronous and simultaneous turns that will automatically end and continue to the next at set times during a day. During each turn, players can log on at their leisure to issue orders for military, economic, construction, trade, and diplomatic actions, to be fairly resolved by the server when the turn ends. This casual element lets grand strategy be played casually over days, weeks or even months, with a maximum of 10 minutes required for a turn.

The TinyPolitik interface and mechanics are enough for a simple strategy experience (yet engaging even for longtime enthusiasts of the genre), but social diplomacy with the other players by Discord or in person completes the picture.

Our playtests at the end of the project involved 20 players campaigning for over two weeks, each with different backgrounds, interests, and commitment.

My Role

As a programmer and designer on the team, I performed a wide range of tasks, including the spherical camera and world province interface, cinematic unit movement, battles, and particles, and both the trade and diplomatic mechanics and UI. This was an immensely fun and rewarding project, and I learned a lot about strategy game systems, multiplayer, and teamworking.
